Night Sweats: the causes & tips to reduce

What Are Night Sweats?

 

Night sweats happens when you sweat so much during the night whilst you're asleep that your pyjama’s and bedding are soaking wet. Whilst it is normal to sweat, sweating in the night can occur if the room is heated or if your bedding and pyjama’s are made from synthetic or heavy fabrics. For some women, night sweats can result from other various causes, including hormonal changes, infections, medicines and underlying health issues. If you do sweat regularly in the night, please seek out medical attention.

Some of the Causes...

 

  • peri menopause and menopause 
  • hormonal changes - pregnancy or thyroid disorder 
  • anxiety 
  • thick bedding, pj’s + mattresses
  • bedding and pj's made from synthetic materials which are less breathable and can trap heat and moisture.
  • medicines such as antidepressants, painkillers and steroids 
  • low blood sugar
  • the temperature in the bedroom is high
  • hyperhidrosis - a condition that makes you sweat all the time

Statistics

 

One study noted that night sweats affects around 41% of people day to day and that 80% of women are impacted by a combination of both night sweats and hot flushes during perimenopause and menopause.

Another study noted that 8-22% of people taking medications such as antidepressants can experience night sweats.

Whilst another study expressed that 27% of pregnant women reported to having night sweats during the third trimester.

Tips to Help Reduce Night Sweats

 

  • Try our Don’t Let Them See You Sweat bra liners - if you sleep without a bra, consider our bra liners that’ll stay in place through the night to keep your chest area dry.
  • Breathable and lightweight bedding and pj’s - made from breathable, moisture-wicking fabric can help to keep you cooler and more comfortable at night. If you regularly sweat through your bedding or clothes, consider keeping extra sets within easy reach.
  • Stress relieving techniques - Stress also worsens night sweats, try relaxation techniques to reduce stress include mindfulness, guided imagery, meditation, and breathing exercises.
  • Avoid caffeine, spicy food and alcohol - These can affect your internal temperature and cause you to sweat. If you experience night sweats, avoiding eating or drinking these close to your bedtime may help relieve your symptoms or avoid triggering them further.
  • Air conditioning/ use of fans - Keeping your room at a cool temperature may be more comfortable. It is also easier to sleep better when the room is not too hot, even for people who do not experience night sweats.
